Proof of full vaccination will be a requirement to access nightclubs and other venues hosting large crowds in the United Kingdom from end September, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Monday.

Johnson said that from the set end September date, negative test results will no longer be enough to allow people mingle with others in large crowds.

"I can serve notice now that by the end of September when all over 18s will have had their chance to be double jabbed, we're planning to make full vaccination the condition of entry to nightclubs and other venues where large crowds gather," he said.

"Proof of a negative test will no longer be enough."

The U.K. government lifted pandemic restrictions in England on Monday, scrapping all social distancing in a step condemned by scientists and opposition parties.

Starting midnight on Sunday, nightclubs were able to reopen and other indoor venues allowed to run at full capacity, while legal mandates covering the wearing of masks and working from home were scrapped.

Johnson, who is self-isolating after his health minister was infected, urged the public to remain prudent and get vaccinated.
