Ethiopia's Selemon Barega produced a brilliant run to clinch Gold in the Men's 10,000m Olympics race on Friday ahead of Uganda's duo Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo.

Barega lingered behind the Ugandans for most of the race but produced an inspired charge to outrun them in the final lap pf the race.

He crossed the line in a time of 27:43.22, with Cheptegei coming in at 27:43.63 and Kiplimo at 27:43.88.

Cheptegei went into the race as one of the favorites, having written a new world record of 26:11.00 in Valencia, Spain, in October 2020.

Selemon's Gold is the first Olympic medal by an Ethiopian at the Tokyo 2020 Games, and it opens the gate for others to appear on the podium as track events now take center stage.

The Silver and Bronze clinched by Cheptegei and Kiplimo are also the first for Uganda.
