The number of people that have been fully vaccinated in Kenya reached 662,089 on Sunday as the country continues its nationwide inoculation campaign.

The country's health ministry said a total of 1,726,193 vaccines have been administered so far, with first doses accounting for 1,064,104.

The East African country launched its mass COVID-19 vaccination drive on March 5 after receiving some 1.2 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The vaccination drive has focused on groups considered to be at high risk, including health care workers and the elderly.

So far, Kenya has recorded 203,680 COVID-19 infections with 3,946 deaths.

Both the caseload and the death toll are the seventh-highest tallies recorded in Africa.

The government earlier this week extended containment measures aimed at curbing further spread of the virus.

The measures include a nationwide nighttime curfew, a ban on large public gatherings and a mandatory wearing of face coverings in public.

The government is also looking to increase the number of vaccinations, and this received a boost on Saturday when a donation of 410,000 AstraZeneca vaccines touched down at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
