Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen on Saturday won the Men's 1,500m race to deny Kenya's Timothy Cheruiyot who led for most of the event.

Ingebrigtsen powered his way past Cheruiyot in the final lap, crossing the finish line in a time of 3:28:32.

Cheruiyot held on for second place, clocking a time of 3:29:01, ahead of Great Britain's Josh Kerr to posted a time of 3:29:05.

Apart from Cheruiyot, the only other African to participate in the race was Abel Kipsang, also representing Kenya.

Kipsang finished fourth after he was also passed in the final lap by Kerr.

Ingebrigtsen's Gold is the fourth for Norway at the Tokyo 2020 Games, after Kristian Blummenfelt won the Men's Triathlon, Karsten Warholm won the Men's 400m hurdles and the duo of Anders Mol and Christian Sørum took beach volleyball Gold.

The Scandinavian country now ranks 19th on the medal standings, having also managed 2 Silver medals and 1 Bronze.

Kenya on the other hand is currently in 25th, having earned 3 Gold, 4 Silver and 2 Bronze medals.

The East African country is the highest ranked African state in the Tokyo Games scheduled to end on Sunday, August 8, with the Men's marathon showdown.
