The number of COVID-19 infections in Uganda surpassed the 96,000 mark on Wednesday after the health ministry announced 112 new cases from 2,794 tests conducted over the last 24 hours.

The country has now recorded a total of 96,067 confirmed cases.

Nine new deaths were also reported in the same period, taking the country's virus-related cumulative fatalities to 2,821.

The East African country is experiencing a second wave of the virus which prompted the government last month to impose strict containment measures, including the closure of learning institutions.

The government has also rolled out a nationwide vaccination campaign initially targeting persons considered to be at high risk, including the elderly, frontline healthcare workers and persons with underlying health conditions.

So far, 1,157,251 doses of vaccine have been administered in the country.

The government has also ramped up a mass sensitization campaign in efforts to encourage the public to adhere to the set health guidelines.

The public is urged to practice hand hygiene, maintain social distancing and to wear face coverings in public spaces.
