The number of fully vaccinated people in Kenya is approaching the 800,000 mark as health authorities ramp up inoculation efforts nationwide.

According to the latest data from the health ministry, 791,295 people had received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccines by Wednesday.

The number of total doses administered in the East African country stood at 2,585,664.

Kenya launched its mass vaccination campaign in March, initially targeting persons considered to be at high risk, including the elderly, those with underlying conditions and healthcare workers.

The country has so far received 3,610,560 vaccines.

Besides the vaccination efforts, the government also imposed various containment measures, including a nationwide nighttime curfew, a ban on large public gatherings and the mandatory wearing of face coverings.

So far, Kenya has reported 232,052 COVID-19 infections with 4,600 deaths.
