Schools in Zimbabwe started receiving students on Sunday, nearly three months after the institutions were shut down amid the country's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Classes are set to resume on Monday for students scheduled to sit exams to graduate from primary school, high school and college.

The rest of the students are set to return to school a week later, September 6.

The reopening of schools comes days after the government announced that it would start administering vaccines to children aged between 14 and 17.

The Southern African country is beginning to see a decline in the number of infections and deaths.

So far, Zimbabwe has recorded 124,367 COVID-19 infections with 4,390 deaths.

Some 2,513,353 people have received at least one jab of the COVID-19 vaccine, with some 1,596,381 persons fully vaccinated.

The figures make Zimbabwe one of the most highly vaccinated countries in Africa.

The country has already received 13 million doses, mainly of China's Sinopharm and Sinovac vaccines.
