Final secondary examinations are currently underway in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) after a two-month delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some 600,000 students are sitting the four-day examinations.

The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on the school calendar in the country, where over half of the over 80 million population is aged under 20.

The examinations come after the government reported a downward trend in hospital occupancy rates in the capital Kinshasa, the epicenter of the country's ongoing third wave.

By Monday, the DR Congo had reported 54,508 infections with 1,057 deaths.

More than 86,914 vaccine doses have been administered in the country as the government continues its efforts to contain the virus.
