The Kenyan government has called on more people to turn up at COVID-19 vaccination centers to take the vital jabs as the country aims to fully reopen its economy.

Kenya has seen an increased arrival of COVID-19 vaccines in the recent past, with the government eyeing more daily vaccination numbers.

The East African country received 880,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine on Monday, the fourth arrival since the month started.

"We call upon our people, particularly those who have not been vaccinated to turn up and get vaccinated now that we are having more vaccines," said Dr. Rashid Aman, the health ministry's Chief Administrative Secretary.

"For us to fully re-open our economy, we need to have herd immunity or have our entire adult population fully vaccinated," he added.

Kenya has so far inoculated 2,870,392 people, with the number of fully vaccinated persons standing at 813,312.

The country on Monday reported 258 new COVID-19 infections from tests conducted in the past 24 hours, taking its total caseload to 240,430.

In the same period, nine patients lost their lives, taking the country's cumulative virus-related fatalities to 4,795.

The health ministry says the government is targeting to increase daily vaccination rates to 150,000 by December this year. Vaccination posts will also be increased from 800 to 3,000 by December with the number rising to 7,877 by June next year.
