The total number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in Kenya surpassed the three million mark on Friday as the country continues its efforts against the virus.

According to the latest data from the health ministry, some 3,031,728 doses have been given with 823,260 persons fully vaccinated.

Kenya rolled out its mass vaccination exercises in March, initially focusing on people considered to be at high risk, including the elderly, people with underlying health conditions and healthcare workers.

So far, the East African country, with a population of over 52 million people, has received 5,146,780 doses of vaccines.

As vaccines continue to arrive, the health ministry hopes to increase daily vaccination rates to 150,000 by December this year. Vaccination posts will also be increased from 800 to 3,000 by December with the number rising to 7,877 by June next year.

Kenya has recorded 242,945 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 4,896 fatalities.
