Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have now been 159,000 deaths registered in the UK where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

There were 26,628 new infections recorded in the country.

However, the vaccine rollout continues to be a great success.

As many as 92,567,446 COVID-19 jabs have been rolled out in the UK, 48,458,700 were first doses and 44,108,746 were second doses.

This even as Prime Minister Boris Johnson unveiled his COVID-19 winter plan ahead of the colder months ahead.

He warned higher levels of coronavirus cases mean “in one way our position today is actually more challenging" than last September.

The Prime Minister told the Downing Street press conference: "I want you to cast your mind back exactly a year and think where we were last September as schools went back and the colder months approached.
