The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called for presidential and legislative elections to be held in Guinea within six months, even as the Guinean military continues with talks with different stakeholders over a return to normalcy.

It has also demanded that no member of the military be allowed to contest in the presidential election.

ECOWAS reiterated its condemnation of the September 5 military coup and called for the immediate release of President Alpha Conde who remains in custody following his arrest.

ECOWAS also announced sanctions against members of the National Committee for Rally and Development (CNRD) and their family members, including travel bas and freezing of their financial assets.

The bloc has also urged other international bodies, including the African Union and the United Nations to endorse its demands and support the restoration of constitutional rule in Guinea.
