South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Friday lead a COVID-19 vaccination sensitization campaign in Gauteng province to rally more people to take the jabs.

Gauteng is the hardest-hit province by the pandemic in South Africa, having reported 916,136 infections with 19,380 fatalities so far.

In total, South Africa has recorded 2,900,994 COVID-19 cases with 87,525 deaths.

Themed Vooma Vaccination Weekend, the campaign will see President Ramaphosa joined by actors from the public and private health sectors, organised labour and business and community as well as faith-based institutions.

According to the South African presidency, this will be the first Vooma Vaccination Weekend in a series of outreaches under this banner in which leadership from across the political spectrum, civil society, traditional leaders, labour and business will mobilise communities to stay safe by being vaccinated.

The total number of vaccines administered in South Africa currently stands at 17,349,100.
