Rwanda's fight against COVID-19 has received a boost after the country received 857,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine.

The shipment arrived at the Kigali International Airport on Monday and was received by the Director of Vaccination Program Hassan Sibomana.

The East African country has embarked on a nationwide vaccination drive in efforts to contain further spread of the virus.

So far, some 2,131,766 doses have been administered, with the number of second doses currently standing at 1,680,361.

Rwanda is one of 15 African countries that achieved a global goal of fully vaccinating 10 percent of their population by 30 September.

The country was singled out by the World Health Organization last week for praise for its vaccination drive.

Dr Salla Ndoungou Ba, WHO Representative ad interim in Rwanda, said: "Rwanda has been a model of good practice in the region since the beginning of its vaccination program in March."

The East African country had recorded 97,870 COVID-19 infections with 1,283 fatalities.
