Kenya's Benson Kipruto and Diana Chemtai Kipyogei won the Men's and Women's Boston Marathons on Monday, the first time since 2017 that the races have been won by athletes from the same country.

Kipruto clocked a time of 2:05:13, having entered the race with the third-fastest personal best among the contenders.

Kipyogei on the other hand reached the finish line in a time of 2:24:45.

The 2021 race was the first in-person Boston Marathon since April 2019, due to the COVID-19 pandemic that left a big impact on sporting activities.

Last year's race was held virtually, and this year's was pushed to the fall for the first time in a history that dates from 1897.

For the Men's race, Lemi Berhanu, the 2016 Boston Marathon winner, finished second in a time of 2:10:37, while fellow Ethiopian Jemal Yimer, in his marathon debut, came in third in a time of 2:10:38.

Another Kenyan, Edna Kiplagat, took second place in the Women’s race in a time of 2:25:09, while Netsanet Gudeta of Ethiopia finished third.
