Russia reported a record 1,002 COVID-related fatalities on Saturday, the first time the daily toll surpassed the 1000-mark since the start of the pandemic.

The country's COVID-19 task force also announced 33,208 new infections, a record for the fifth consecutive day.

Russia has seen a sharp rise in infections and deaths, with authorities attributing this to slow vaccinations.

The situation forced the country's health ministry earlier this week to ask retired vaccinated medics to return to hospitals.

According to Reuters, Russia estimates that 45% of its population may have an immunity to COVID-19 after receiving a vaccine or recovering from the illness, data published by the coronavirus task force on Saturday showed. In Moscow the figure is 61% and is at 64% in the region surrounding the capital.

Russia has now reported 7,958,384 confirmed COVID-19 infections with 222,315 deaths.
