The United Nations Rights Council has demanded an "immediate" return to civilian rule in Sudan.

The country was plunged into uncertainty following a military takeover of the government on October 25, with top civilian government officials detained.

The country was rocked by protests on Saturday as hundreds of thousands or people marches in various cities across the country, demanding an immediate restoration of civilian rule.

The international community has also been piling pressure on the Sudanese military leaders to restore civilian rule and release the detained leaders.

Sudan's army General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Thursday held a telephone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in which he is reported to have agreed on the need to accelerate the formation of a government.
