The Netherlands on Thursday reported a record daily number of new COVID-19 cases, a day before the government is expected to announce fresh restrictions to contain a surge in infections.

According to the RIVM public health institute, 16,364 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours surpassing the previous record of 12,997 reported on December 20 last year.

A further 26 people also died from the deadly disease over the last 24 hours, the institute added.

With Prime Minister Mark Rutte expected to hold a press conference on Friday to announce new measures, local media have reported that a two-week "light lockdown" has been proposed by experts.

Other proposed restrictions include cancelling large events, closing cinemas and theatres and making bars and restaurants close down earlier in the evening. However, schools will remain open.

The experts have also proposed the sensitive recommendation of restricting access to certain facilities, even to those who are vaccinated or who have recovered from the disease.
