Gabonese Health Minister Guy Patrick Obiang confirmed a downward trend in COVID-19 infections in the country at a press conference held here Friday.

"The health context of the COVID-19 pandemic in our country shows a downward trend as the third wave of contamination has reached its peak in the first week of October," he told journalists.

"This third wave is characterized as short over time but pernicious in its intensity," he noted, mainly referring to the Delta variant.

"This mark of the Gabonese population's adherence to vaccination reflects their desire to protect themselves against this devastating pandemic whose waves follow each other every three months," he said, while urging more people to get vaccinated in the country.

To date, Gabon has reported 36,587 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 262 deaths.
