The UK on Monday reported 39,705 new daily coronavirus cases and 47 related deaths as prime minister Boris Johnson sounded a warning on a rise of infections in Europe.

The figures raise the cumulative number of cases to 9,600,369 while the death toll stands at 142,945.

However, separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have been 167,000 deaths registered in the UK where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

50,582,504 people have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine representing 88 percent of the country's population aged 12 and above while 46,027,909 people or 80 percent of that population has received a second COVID-19 vaccine dose. 12,860,751 people have received a booster or third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Meanwhile, Johnson warned that a new wave of coronavirus has "steadily" swept through central Europe and is now affecting the country's nearest neighbours in western Europe.

"Our friends on the continent have been forced to respond with various degrees of new restrictions, from full lockdowns, to lockdowns for the unvaccinated, to restrictions on business opening hours and restrictions on social gatherings," Johnson said.

"We don't yet know the extent to which this new wave will wash up on our shores, but history shows we cannot afford to be complacent."

Johnson appealed to people who have been double-vaccinated individuals to get their third dose if they are eligible.

"Please go and get vaccinated to protect yourself and others," he said.
