Russia reports second highest single-day COVID-19 death toll

Russia on Sunday reported its second highest number of daily deaths from COVID-19 just a day after it recorded its highest single-day number of fatalities.

Russia recorded 1,252 deaths from COVID-19 following a record 1,254 deaths on Saturday. St. Petersburg recorded the highest number of fatalities with 74, followed by Krasnodar Region with 69, and Moscow Region with 64 fatalities.

Russia also reported 36,970 new cases compared to 37,120 on Saturday, according to the anti-coronavirus crisis centre.

3,438 COVID-19 cases were detected in Moscow while a further 2,496 cases were recorded in St. Petersburg and 1,909 cases of the infection were confirmed in Moscow Region. Meanwhile, 1,661 cases were detected in the Samara Region, 989 in Krasnodar Region and 884 cases in Crimea.

The number of active cases in the country, patients who are receiving treatment, increased to 1,042,133.

Russia has now recorded a total of 9,331,158 COVID-19 cases and 264,095 deaths.

The centre added that the number of recoveries rose by 32,504 in last 24 hours to 8,024,930.
