The UK on Monday reported 44,917 new confirmed coronavirus cases and another 45 COVID-19 deaths in the latest 24-hour period.

The number of cases is an increase from the 40,004 new COVID-19 cases reported on Sunday but lower than the 61 fatalities reported on the same day.

Monday's number of cases is higher than the 39,705 cases reported this time last week but lower than the 47 deaths reported during a similar time.

The UK has now reported a total of 9,889,926 confirmed cases and 143,972 deaths.

According to the government's COVID-19 dashboard 16,424 people received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine while 13,892 others received a second dose pushing the respective totals to 50,777,474 and 46,168,300.

The number of people who have received a booster shot stands at 15,331,311 after a further 237,995 doses were administered.

UK prime minister Boris Johnson on Monday said there was nothing in the current data saying the country needed to move to Plan B in terms of its COVID-19 response.

"The best single thing you can all do is get your booster. When you are called forward to get it, please do so," Johnson said.

Johnson has appealed to people who have been double-vaccinated individuals to get their third dose if they are eligible ahead of the winter season.

COVID-19 booster shots are now being offered to persons aged 40 and over while 16 and 17-year-olds are now eligible for a second dose, just like adults.
