The top three sides in the English Premier League remain within touching distance of each other after they all won their respective matches on Saturday, albeit by slim margins.

Leaders and defending champions Manchester City edged 10-man Wolves 1-0 at Etihad Stadium in the early kick-off with Raheem Sterling converting a controversial second-half penalty to secure all three points.

That was Sterling's 100th Premier League goal making him just the 32nd player in the competition's history to hit that milestone.

Wolves striker Raul Jimenez was sent off for two bookings within 31 seconds just before half-time; first for a foul on halfway and then for attempting to block the resulting free-kick.

Meanwhile, Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah won and converted the penalty midway through the second half as Liverpool defeated Aston Villa 1-0.

Salah's strike saw him make it 14 league goals this season pulling five clear of second-placed Jamie Vardy of Leicester City.

Defeat for Villa also saw manager Steven Gerrard, a club legend at Liverpool, fail to spoil the party against his former side.

European champions Chelsea came from a goal down to beat stubborn Leeds United 3-2 at Stamford Bridge and bounce back from their shock defeat against West Ham last time out.

Raphinha gave Leeds the lead with a 28th minute penalty but Chelsea leveled through Mason Mount three minutes before the break.

Jorginho converted a penalty shortly before the hour mark but Joe Gelhardt equalized for Leeds with just seven minutes of normal time left.

However, Jorginho stepped up again deep into added time to score a second penalty and snatch victory for Thomas Tuchel's side.

City leads the table with 38 points followed by Liverpool with 37 and Chelsea a point back on 36.

The day's other game saw Arsenal bounce back from two consecutive defeats by thumping Southampton 3-0 at Emirates Stadium.

Alexandre Lacazette, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel scored as the Gunners strengthened their hopes of competing for a place in Europe.
