The English Premier League Board on Thursday postponed two games that were scheduled to be played on Sunday due to COVID-19.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers v Watford match and the Liverpool v Leeds United game now become the latest in a string of matches that have been postponed this month as the U.K. sees a spike in new cases amid the emergence of the Omicron variant.

The Board concluded that Leeds United will not be able to fulfil their fixture this weekend due to the number of players with COVID-19, injuries and illness.

The Premier League confirmed that the club's training ground has also been closed after consultation with the U.K. Health Security Agency.

Watford on the other hand remain with an insufficient number of players to field a team after their match against Crystal Palace last Saturday was postponed following a COVID-19 outbreak.

The Hornets will however resume action against West Ham United on December 28 as players return from isolation.

Last week, the Premier League recorded a steep rise in new COVID-19 infections within, prompting the postponement of ten games.

The situation led to calls by some clubs to have the league halted until early January to allow them curb the spread of the virus.

The board however said it assesses applications to postpone matches on a case-by-case basis, based on existing rules and adapted COVID-19 postponement guidance introduced to clubs in light of the new Omicron variant.
