The English Premier League game between Aston Villa and Leeds United, which was scheduled for December 28, has been postponed due to COVID-19 infections on the Leeds United squad.

According to Leeds, there have been no new infections in the playing squad, but the majority of those who tested positive prior to the Liverpool game are not yet out of isolation.

"Therefore, we still do not have enough recognized first-team players to meet the Premier League requirements for the fixture," the club said in a statement.

This is the latest in a string of postponements that have hit the Premier League as the U.K. battles a spike in new infections.

Other games that were postponed this week include Wolverhampton Wanders vs Watford and Burnley vs Everton.

Last week, a total of ten fixtures were postponed for the same reason, sparking calls for the League to take a break until January to allow clubs deal with their outbreaks.

The Premier League Board however said it assesses applications to postpone matches on a case-by-case basis, based on existing rules and adapted COVID-19 postponement guidance introduced to clubs in light of the new Omicron variant.
