The United Nations Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Libya, Stephanie Williams, on Monday called upon Libyan lawmakers to "urgently address" obstacles impeding the much-awaited parliamentary and presidential election.

Williams' call came as the Libya House of Representatives convened to discuss the emerging issues that made it impossible to hold the elections as scheduled on December 24.

"We all hope that the people's representatives will fulfill their national responsibility to urgently address the requests of the High National Elections Commission regarding electoral legislation and judicial appeals to push the electoral process forward, wishing them success in this task," she implored the legislators via Twitter.

Libya's election, the culmination of a year-long U.N.-backed political process, was intended to mark a fresh start for the North African country that has been riddled with conflict for more than a decade.
