South Africa's health ministry on Tuesday reported 25 new COVID-19 deaths, bringing the country's total number of virus-related fatalities to 90,854.

The figures were published by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), a division of the National Health Laboratory Service, which also reported 7,216 new cases, bringing the country's total number of reported infections to 3,424,534.

Of the country's total registered cases, Gauteng province has accounts for the highest, with 1,128,285 infections reports so far, which is more than the tallies recorded by all other African countries individually.

Two other South African provinces have reported more than half a million cases; KwaZulu-Natal (603,486) and Western Cape (585,799).

The country is banking on vaccinations to contain further spread of the virus.

So far, a total of 27,807,355 vaccine doses have been administered since the start of the nationwide inoculation drive in February.
