Military group confirms Burkina Faso coup, suspends Constitution

A military group on Monday evening confirmed the coup in Burkina Faso in a media briefing, announcing the suspension of the country's Constitution.

The Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration, through a spokesperson, said they have taken power from President Roch Kabore.

The leader of the group has been identified as Lieutenant Colonel Paul Henri Sanadaogo Damiba.

The group, which arrested some top government officials, said none of them had been harmed in the coup, adding that the operation took place without bloodshed.

The mutinying soldiers announced a raft of restrictions for the country, including a nationwide night curfew.

"The constitution has been suspended," said Capt Sidsore Kader Ouedraogo. "Secondly the government has been dissolved, thirdly the National Assembly has been dissolved, fourthly land and air borders have been closed from January 24, 2022, lastly a curfew has been imposed from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m."
