The total number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in Kenya has surpassed the 12 million mark as the country continues its nationwide inoculation efforts.

According to the health ministry, 12,107,587 doses had been administered by Sunday. Of these, 6,475,154 are partially vaccinations while 5,437,273 persons were fully vaccinated.

Worth noting, some 54,094 vaccine doses were given to persons aged between 15-18 years.

The Kenyan government rolled out vaccination for this age group in November 2020 in efforts to boost its public protection against the virus.

The vaccination campaign has been complemented by other containment measures, including a mandatory wearing of face coverings.

The Kenyan government is aiming to administer at least 20 million vaccine doses between January and June 2022.

This is part of a plan to fully vaccinate 19 million adults (70 percent of the adult population) by end of June 2022 and the entire adult population of 27 million people by the end of the year.

During the same period, it will also aim to fully vaccinate 2.9 million teenagers aged 15-17 years (50 percent of the population) and the entire teenage population of 5.8 million by end of December 2022.

So far, the East African country has recorded 321,335 COVID-19 infections with 5,580 fatalities.
