Turkey reported 94,783 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, its highest daily figure since the onset of the pandemic, but Health Minister Fahrettin Koca remains confident the worst of the pandemic is in the past.
The country has seen a recent spike in daily cases, a trend attributed to the omicron variant.
Koca took to Twitter to dismiss any fears that the increase in daily cases indicated that the country was headed for tough times.
"The increase in the number of cases due to the Omicron variant should not be taken as disheartening," he said. "The virus is not as strong as it used to be. The alarming period of the epidemic is now over. By following the measures, we will continue our lives without interrupting our vaccinations. The world's agenda is returning to normal."
To bolster its efforts of containing the virus, Turkey started offering the fifth booster doses of COVID-19 vaccines for a specific group of people at the end of December.
