The president of the European Council, Charles Michel, has called for a special emergency summit on Thursday in Brussels to discuss the latest developments related to Ukraine and Russia.

The meeting will come three days after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed two decrees recognizing the "Luhansk People's Republic (LPR)" and the "Donetsk People's Republic (DPR)" as independent and sovereign states.
