Nigerian President Muhammad Buhari is set to arrive in Kenya later on Tuesday ahead of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), scheduled for 3rd – 4th March, in Nairobi.

The Nigerian Presidency said Buhari made the trip at the invitation of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

"President Buhari is expected to deliver the National Statement of the country and participate in high-level dialogue sessions on the environment at the event," the presidency said.

Ministers of environment and other representatives from over 170 nations convened are already in Nairobi for the three-day hybrid (in-person and online) fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA).

The commemoration of UNEP@50 will be held under the overall theme of "Strengthening UNEP for the implementation of the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development."

According to the agency, UNEP@50 is a time to reflect on the past and envision the future. It provides an opportunity to reinvigorate international cooperation and spur collective action to address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.

Upon the completion of his trip to Kenya, President Buhari is expected to travel to London, where he is scheduled to undergo routine medical checks for a maximum of two weeks.
