Russian driver Nikita Mazepin has been sacked by the Haas Formula One team over his country's military operation in Ukraine.

"Haas F1 Team has elected to terminate, with immediate effect, the title partnership of Uralkali, and the driver contract of Nikita Mazepin," said a statement from the team.

The decision comes just two weeks before the start of the new Formula 1 season, and 10 days since Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine.

Mazepin becomes the latest casualty in a series of sanctions against Russia and Russian citizens, in retaliation to the operation.

On Thursday, Formula 1 confirmed that it has terminated its contract with the Russian Grand Prix promoter, meaning that Russia will no longer have a race in the future.

It remains unclear who will replace Mazepin at Haas.

The second round of pre-season tests begins on Thursday, March 10 in Bahrain, with the opening Grand Prix of the season taking place at the same venue from March 18-20.
