The world does not need a new cold war and bloc confrontation but growth and progress for all, according to the Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations Zhang Jun.

Zhang made the remarks at a meeting of the Security Council of the world organization on cooperation with the OSCE.

"The Cold War is long over. The Cold War mentality based on bloc confrontation should be completely abandoned. Provoking a bloc confrontation will only lead to catastrophes and strengthen divisions," he said.

"This applies to Europe and other regions of the world," the Chinese diplomat continued. "The world does not need a new cold war, the world needs common progress and growth."

The Chinese envoy's remarks came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continued to seek more sactions against Russia.

Zelenskyy said earlier on Monday that he had spoken to the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen on increasing sanctions against Moscow.

Zhang in his address at the Security Council meeting recalled the principle of indivisibility of security, which at one time formed the basis of the Helsinki Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe.

"Now this principle is of particular importance, it needs to be implemented in practice. The final solution to the crisis in Ukraine will be a serious and respectful attitude to the security concerns of all states and the creation of a balanced and effective European security architecture," he said.
