With four World Cup appearances as a player, Cameroon's coach Rigobert Song now seeks to guide the country to the grand football stage in Qatar.

The 45-year-old was appointed to his position following the sacking of Antonio Conceiçao after he failed to guide the Indomitable Lions to glory in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) staged in Cameroon last month.

Song brought with him a wealth of football experience, having played for Cameroon in four FIFA World Cups between 1994 and 2010.

He also holds the country's record number of national team appearances, having played 137 games.

All this could however count for nothing if the Indomitable Lions fail to overturn a 1-0 first–leg loss to Algeria and secure a spot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Song remains confident the record African football champions will secure a place in the global showdown.

"Our [first leg] performance was not bad," he said in his pre-game briefing.

"We did what had to be done. We remain confident, we need to get a result in the return game. We will try to qualify in Blida."

Song may however have to make do without talismanic captain Vincent Aboubakar if he does not shake off a heel injury that he picked up in the early stages of the second half of the first leg clash in Douala.

Aboubakar was an influential presence in the team's AFCON outing, scoring a record 8 goals.

Cameroon has played at the FIFA World Cup seven times, the most by an African country.
