Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Monday hosted the Chairman of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, for talks in Cairo.

Details of the conversation have not been made public yet, but local media sources said the two were expected to review bilateral relations and the political crisis in Sudan.

Sudan has been rocked by regular protests calling for civilian rule since Al-Burhan led a military takeover on October 25.

The takeover derailed a fragile power-sharing agreement between the army and civilians that had been negotiated after the 2019 overthrow of longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir.

Regional and international partners have called for dialogue to resolve the crisis.

Egypt and Sudan have enjoyed warm relations for years, bound by historical, political, economic and cultural ties.
