Kenya on Wednesday launched its first mobile application that seeks to promote the adoption of green buildings across the country.

Ted Otieno, chairperson of the Kenya Green Building Society (KGBS), told journalists in Nairobi, Kenya's capital, that the app, dubbed Jenga Green Library, is a green building material and services directory for displaying the entire supply chain of sustainable building materials and services that reduce environmental pollution.

"The mobile application will assist real (estate) developers, buyers, homeowners, and urban planners to efficiently identify green products and service providers who drive toward sustainability within the built environment," Otieno said.

He noted that the digital platform aspires to be a one-stop shop for the players in the green building sector committed to promoting the conservation of water and energy resources.

"The mobile app will play a role in promoting the uptake of the use of recycled building materials that reduce consumption of natural resources," he said.

According to KGBS, the building and construction sector currently accounts for more than 30 percent of Kenya's energy consumption and energy-related carbon dioxide emissions.

"Green buildings will set Kenya on a trajectory to meet the global climate ambitions set forth in the Paris Agreement. Building green is an urgent response to climate action, health and wellbeing, and resource circularity," Otieno added.
