Preparations for the 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) have engaged a new gear after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) conducted the draw for the tournament.

The 12 qualified teams have been placed in three groups of four each.

The host nation, Morocco, is scheduled to open the tournament against Burkina Faso on July 2 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat.

Defending Champions Nigeria on the other hand will open their account on July 4 against long-time rivals South Africa.

The Super Falcons have won the continental tournament a record nine times.

Four debutants will participate in the tournament, a fact many stakeholders consider to be an indicator of growth in women’s football in Africa.

The four, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi and Togo go into the tournament hoping to leave a mark with their abilities.

Organizers have expressed hope that the 2022 WAFCON will not only entertain fans, but will also show the world the progress women’s football has made in Africa.

"CAF has been working so hard to develop women's football and offer more opportunities of play. Now, we hope that the teams will be in good shape and that we will have a great show," said Kanizat Ibrahim, Chairperson of CAF Women's Football Organizing Committee.
