The U.S. Senate overwhelmingly approved nearly $40 billion in new aid for Ukraine on Thursday sending the bill to the White House for President Joe Biden to sign into law.

The Senate voted 86-11 in favor of the emergency package of military, economic and humanitarian assistance, by far the largest U.S. aid package for Ukraine to date.

The legislation provides $6 billion for weapons, training and financial support for Ukraine's military and $4 billion in military financing over the next five months through the end of September, according to a House Committee on Appropriations summary of the legislation.

It also includes $9 billion to replenish U.S. stocks of weapons being sent to Ukraine and nearly $4 billion for expanded U.S. military operations in Europe. In addition, the bill commits $8.76 billion in economic support for Ukraine's government and more than $5 billion to address the expanding global food shortages and rising prices caused by the conflict.

The Senate vote on Thursday came as Biden hosted the Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson and President Sauli Niinisto of Finland at the White House.
