U.S. President Joe Biden and Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador met at the White House on Tuesday.

The meeting at the White House comes a month after Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador skipped the U.S.-hosted Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles to protest Biden's decision to exclude the governments of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

According to a readout by White House, the two leaders "discussed our shared work to address the root causes of migration from Northern Central America and the need to collaborate on concrete next steps in this effort."

Biden said a main focus of the meeting was addressing migration and his administration has been working on creating work opportunities for migrants, including through granting more work visas.

Lopez Obrador also said there was room to intensify bilateral relations under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement (USMCA) and that some tariffs could be suspended, although he did not specify which ones.

Following the meeting, the U.S. and Mexico plan to launch a bilateral working group on labor migration pathways and worker protections, and "expand our diplomatic coordination on migration issues throughout the region," according to U.S. officials.
