Five people were killed in separate gun attacks in South Africa’s Western Cape Province on Saturday night as a wave of shootings continues to rock the country.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) three men aged 34, 36 and 50 were gunned down in Khayelitsha township. The service says investigations into the killings have already been launched but no arrests have been made yet.

In a separate incident, two men in their thirties were shot dead in Makhaza. SAPS said the victims were ambushed as they were driving, before the attackers fled the scene.

One of the victims died on the scene while the other one succumbed to death shortly after being admitted to hospital.

SAPS said investigations have also been opened into the second shooting, but they believe that the incident could be linked to drug trade in the area.

The latest gun attacks come on the back of multiple shootings that left more than 25 people dead.

Last weekend, 16 people were killed by shooters at a tavern in Soweto, an incident that received wide condemnation from the government.

Before that, four other gun attacks killed 10 people cumulatively in South Africa.

Following the Soweto shooting, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa urged unity in the fight against crime in South Africa.

Police have pledged to deploy all resources to bring the perpetrators of the violence under book.
