Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday announced a stimulus package aimed at alleviating the high cost of living for vulnerable households as the government seeks sustainable solutions to "recurrent" increases in food prices every election.

Kenyatta, who addressed the nation, announced a significant reduction in the price of maize flour and also appealed to local millers not to hoard the product.

"For the last four years, our Nation and the Horn of Africa Region at large, have experienced unexpected low rainfall, resulting in drought, poor harvests and crop failure in some parts of the country," he noted.

He added that his administration has engaged all milling companies registered by Agricultural and Food Authority (AFA), and issued a Legal Notice under the hand of the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and through a notice to be effected immediately.
