Kenya's National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has suspended operations of the bus company that owns the bus that was involved in a deadly accident on Sunday killing at least 33 passengers.

NTSA made the announcement in a statement on Monday, noting that an investigation into the crash has been launched.

"Following the fatal road traffic crash that occurred on Sunday 24th July, 2022, at the Nithi Bridge, Tharaka Nithi County that has since claimed the lives of 33 passengers, the authority hereby halts the operations of Modern Coast Express Limited," the statement reads in part.

"A thorough multi-agency investigation into the crash and an evaluation of the operator's safety operational standards is currently underway."

According to reports by different Kenyan media outlets, the bus veered off the Nithi Bridge and plunged 40 metres into the river en route from Meru to Mombasa.
