A United Nations delegation has visited the troubled Kapoeta North County in South Sudan following recent attacks that left hundreds of people dead.

According to local media, cattle-related violence in the County earlier this month led to the deaths of more than 230 people, and tension remains high.

Many people were left with injuries after the attack and have been receiving medical treatment in surrounding hospitals.

Following that attack, a team from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the government of Eastern Equatoria State visited the area to engage with the affected communities, reduce tensions and find out why the violence has occurred.

"I urge you, the chiefs, to carry the message of peace to the youth, requesting them to shun violence, because conflict hinders peace and development," said Francis Shuei Dieu, a Civil Affairs Officer serving with the peacekeeping mission.

More than 15,000 cattle are reported to have been stolen during the raids, leaving the local communities which rely heavily on animals for their livelihoods dejected.

Days after the raid, UNMISS warned of possible counter-campaigns to retrieve the stolen cattle.

The agency appealed to the government and local community leaders to take urgent steps to prevent the violence from spiraling, specifically to resolve disputes through dialogue; in addition to holding accountable those responsible for the violence.
