Rwanda started administering fourth jabs of COVID-19 vaccines on Monday as the country continues its nationwide efforts against the virus.

The Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) noted that administering the fourth jabs would help the country boost its population's immunity.

"The second booster (fourth jab) is something that some countries have started administering. We call it the second booster because we have been rolling out the first booster since March," New Times Rwanda reported quoting Julien Niyingabira, the Rwanda Health Communication Centre (RHCC) Division Manager.

"When you get a booster, you kind of stimulate the immunity that you acquired earlier from the primary vaccinations," he added.

The fourth booster campaign will initially target high-risk groups, including the elderly and people living with comorbidities like chronic diseases.

So far, Rwanda has recorded a total of 132,288 COVID-19 infections with 1,466 deaths.
