Nineteen people have died and 26 others are injured after a road accident in Türkiye.

The incident took place in Derik district of Mardin province, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Saturday in an update.

Six of the injured are in serious condition, he added.

According to the official, the accident in Derik "occurred after the brakes gave out on a lorry, which hit a crowd." Video footage showed a driver losing control of his truck, then careening towards nearby vehicles and pedestrians trying to flee.

It was the second major crash of the day in Türkiye after another involving a bus and an ambulance in Gaziantep province, which local media said killed 16 people.
