A 14-year-ol girl was electrocuted to death after powerful storms toppled trees and downed thousands of power lines in Michigan, officials said on Tuesday following Monday's devastation.

According to officials, the teenager grabbed what she thought was a stick in her backyard but it turned out to be a loose charged power line.

The sweeping storms also left more than 370,000 people without electricity across the state, with some schools forced to suspend classes until conditions improved.

Wind gusts reaching 70 mph were recorded in some places.

State troopers were deployed to help with welfare checks in the damaged areas. They blocked off roads with downed power lines and helped evaluate damage.

DTE Energy said response teams were already dispatched to the affected areas and were working around the clock to restore power.
