Death toll in Nigeria floods rises to 92

The death toll from widespread flooding in northern Nigeria's Jigawa State has increased to 92, police authorities confirmed on Monday.

Jigawa was barraged by heavy rains which started in August, leaving trails of massive destruction across the state.

Lawan Adam, the police spokesperson said more deaths had been confirmed, taking the toll to 92 currently, and with search operations still ongoing.

Adam pointed out that the deaths were caused by drowning, deadly thunderstorms, and by collapsed buildings.

The floods have also displaced thousands of people, with hundreds of houses destroyed by gushing waters and other structured brought down by strong winds.

Some of the affected areas include Kiri Kasamma, Dutse, Hadejia, Kafin Hausa, Guri, Auyo and Jahun.

Deadly floods are a persistent problem in Jigawa state, as the natural calamity is reported nearly every year.
