South Sudan and Djibouti on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to connect fiber optic cable running from Djibouti through Ethiopia to South Sudan.

South Sudan's Ministry of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services said in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, that the MOU will be followed by the formation of a technical team from both countries to deliberate on the project.

The deal was signed by South Sudanese Minister of Information Michael Makuei Lueth and senior officials from Djibouti.

South Sudan said it is working closely with the World Bank to connect the country with another fiber optic cable from Kenya.

The country aims to lay the fiber-optic network to link the national capital Juba with the rest of the world as well as cut the high cost of using the internet.
