Kenyan schools are scheduled to open on Monday, September 26, for the fourth time this year, as the country continues a months-long plan to recover time lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic disruptions.

Elementary, primary and secondary school learners have already undertaken three congested terms so far this year despite complaints from some parents regarding the financial strain this has brought them.

Under normal programming, schools in the country have three terms annually.

Kenyan schools remained closed for more than nine months from March 2020 at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While some schools, mostly private, were able to offer remote classes, many public schools could not give lessons due to technological and financial challenges.

Since the government allowed schools to reopen in January 2021, the institutions have been in a race to recover the months that were lost to the pandemic disruption.

Learners have taken shorter school terms with shortened holidays in between, with national examinations taken in times not traditionally set for the exercises.

The government hopes to resume normal school calendars from 2023.
